If you believe that you have been the victim of an identity theft or a victim of credit card fraud or check forgeries it is important to monitor your credit reports. The three major credit bureaus are Experian (which you can call at 888-397-3742), Trans Union (which you can call at 800-680-7289) and (Equifax which you can call at 800-525-6285.) Everyone is entitled to one free copy of their credit report annually from each of the three credit bureaus.
If you believe your identity has been stolen, in addition to contacting your local police agency, you should place a fraud alert on your credit file. By placing a fraud alert on your credit file, no one will be able to open up a new line of credit in your name without your permission. This alert can be placed on your credit file for free and lasts 90 days. You can place an alert on your file by contacting the three credit bureaus listed above.
If you believe your Social Security Number has been misused, you should contact the Social Security Administration Fraud Hotline at 800-269-0271.
