Medical Center Transport
Free Transportation Service
The Sherburne County Veterans Service Office coordinates a transportation program utilizing a staff of volunteer drivers for the purpose of providing veterans with a means of transportation to scheduled appointments at the Minneapolis and St. Cloud Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Centers. This service is provided free of charge.
Our transportation program operates two passenger vans which are not handicapped accessible. We cannot accommodate persons who are wheelchair bound unless they are capable of transferring themselves from the wheelchair to the van. Policy does not permit our volunteer drivers to lift passengers (or wheelchairs) in to or out of the vehicle. We also cannot transport anyone with a serious or acute medical condition as our drivers are not Emergency medical technician (EMT) trained. A veteran may be accompanied by another individual if their physical or mental condition warrants an escort.
We accommodate appointments scheduled at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center Monday through Thursday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Requests for transportation to the St. Cloud VA Medical Center can be made for appointments scheduled Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., and are accepted based on the availability of a volunteer driver. We do not offer this transportation service on holidays or weekends and cannot be used for emergencies.
Make an Appointment or Answer Questions
It is the responsibility of the veteran to call in a ride request to our office. We encourage veterans to call well in advance of their appointments; but require notification a minimum of two days prior to the appointment date. This is very important because the ride schedule is coordinated with the driver and all passengers are notified midday the day before their appointment of the pick-up time and location.
If you have questions regarding this program or wish to schedule transportation, please contact our office at 763-765-3100 or toll free at 800-433-5243.
