Lightning

Lightning is one of the leading causes of weather-related fatalities. The risk of being struck is low but the consequences of lightning strike injuries are serious. July is generally the month with the most lightning. People struck by lightning DO NOT carry a charge so giving first aid to lightning strike victims can save their lives.

Precautions during Lightning events

  • Check the weather forecast before participating in outdoor activities
  • Avoid open spaces during a Thunderstorm
  • Equip home with whole-house surge protectors
  • Find a safe, enclosed shelter when you hear Thunder. Remember the phrase, "When Thunder roars, go indoors."
  • Do NOT shower, wash dishes, or have any other contact with water during a thunderstorm because lightning can travel through a building's plumbing.
