Asbestos

Asbestos is found in some types of:

  • Ceiling tiles
  • Floor tiles
  • Siding
  • Shingles
  • Insulation

It is recommended that asbestos be removed by a licensed contractor. It can cause serious health risks when fibers are disturbed and become airborne. For a list of licensed asbestos contractors and information on proper removal procedures, contact the Minnesota Department of Health at 651-201-4620.

If you remove asbestos from your home by yourself, please follow the Minnesota Department of Health removal procedures. Asbestos can be disposed at the following landfills in Sherburne County:

Asphalt Driveway Sealer

Place empty sealer containers in the garbage. Bring leftover asphalt and driveway sealer to the Tri-County Household Hazardous Waste Facility or to Sherburne County Mobile Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events.

Asphalt, Concrete, & Sand

Asphalt and concrete can be recycled into road materials. Concrete and paving contractors may accept asphalt, concrete and sand. Call first. Or, bring asphalt, concrete and sand to a landfill.

Building materials include items such as:

  • Hardwood flooring
  • Laminate flooring
  • Shingles & Siding
  • Sheetrock
  • Windows

Try to reuse or recycle as much as possible. If reusing and recycling are not options you may call your garbage hauler for pick-up options or bring to a landfill.

Bring mineral spirits and other flammable solvents to the Tri-County Household Hazardous Waste Facility or Sherburne County Mobile Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events. Place empty containers in the garbage.

Paint

Hazardous Wastes

Bring leftover paint to the Tri-County Household Hazardous Waste Facility or Sherburne County Mobile Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events for free. Do not place in the garbage or pour down the drain or sewer. Place empty cans and dried latex paint cans in the garbage. Leave the cover off so your garbage hauler can see that the can is empty and/or dry.

Treated Wood & Lumber

Some lumber is treated to protect it from water damage and prevent rot. It can create environmental problems when burned. Bring treated wood - including railroad ties, green treated and pressure treated wood – to a landfill. Do not burn.
