Solid Waste – Compost Sites

Composting Sites within Sherburne County

The following sites accept certain compostable materials at no cost to Sherburne County residents. Finished compost and wood chips(mulch) are available at no cost on a first come - first serve basis. Residents wishing to use the finished products must provide their own method of transportation and should plan on loading themselves.




City of Becker

Hours of Operation: Open all the time (24 hour per day, 7 days per week)

Directions: From Highway10, take Sherburne Avenue north to Central Avenue. Go east (right) to 150th Avenue (right turn). Go south on 150th Avenue to 122nd Street. Turn east on 122nd Street to 153rd Avenue. Go south on 153rd to the compost site on the right (west side of the road).

Acceptable Items: branches under 12", brush, grass clippings, leaves, trees under 12" (including Christmas), and yard waste

Unacceptable Items: branches over 12", garbage, stumps, treated lumber, trees over 12", or concrete waste of any kind (concrete is NOT compostable and violators will be fined.)

Hours of Operation: 9:00AM - 9:00PM, daily, year-round

Directions: Take Hwy 10 to County Road 43. Go south on County Road 43 to 198th Avenue. Take a left onto 198th Avenue and then a right into the City of Big Lake Public Works site. The compost site is behind the Public Works buildings. There should be a sign stating “Yard Waste Composting” to direct residents to the site.

Acceptable Items: brush under 2" in diameter (separated from grass and leaves), brush over 2" in diameter (cut in 2' lengths and stacked), Christmas trees, grass clippings, leaves, and yard waste

Unacceptable Items: boxes, branches over 4" in diameter, commercial waste, concrete, garbage, leaf bags, treated lumber, trees, or stumps

Hours of Operation: Dawn to dusk

Directions: From Hwy 10, go north on Proctor Avenue to Proctor Road (County Road 77). Turn left into the City Street and Park Department site. Stay on the left. Look for small signs.

Acceptable Items: Christmas trees (call for drop rates), brush, branches up to 4" diameter, grass clippings, leaves, and yard waste

Unacceptable Items: boxes, branches over 4" in diameter, commercial waste, garbage, leaf bags, treated lumber, trees, or stumps

Hours of Operation: Open all the time (24 hour per day, 7 days per week)

Directions: Go south on Main Street from Fremont Avenue (County Road 4). Just past the City Park ball fields, a sign is posted at the entrance that says “Leaf and Brush Site”. Go south past the Park n’ Ride lot and continue about ¼ mile (following the signs).

Acceptable Items: Christmas trees (please separate Christmas trees and tree trimmings from other yard waste for chipping), grass clippings, leaves, tree trimmings up to 4" in diameter, and yard waste

Unacceptable Items: boxes, branches over 4" in diameter, commercial waste, concrete, garbage, leaf bags, treated lumber, trees, or stumps
