Our Traffic Safety Course offers up-to-date traffic safety information to the public. The course offers a wide range of information from some of the most skilled drivers in the department. Deputies can log more than 50,000 road miles in a single year and learn the true value of defensive driving - from keeping themselves safe to responding to accidents of others.
Attend the Traffic Safety Course and you will learn from experienced officers how to be a safer and better driver. You will leave with techniques that you can put to immediate use behind the wheel.
Traffic Violators
Sherburne County deputies have the discretion to offer traffic violators the option of attending the Traffic Safety Course in lieu of a ticket and the accompanying fines or court costs. If referred to the course, you will not be required to pay the fine for your traffic violation nor will an additional moving violation be added to your driving record.
Patrol deputies may refer you to the course for the following eligible infractions:
Class information
Classes are held from 6:30pm to 8:30 pm in the Emergency Operations Center at the Sherburne County Government Center. For upcoming class dates and times, call the Sheriff's Office or check the table below.

No late admission will be accepted. If referred because of a traffic violation, and you are late or fail to appear, your class fee will be forfeited and your citation will be sent to the County Attorney's Office for prosecution. You will then be expected to pay the fine or appear in court and you will not be eligible to participate in the Sherburne County Traffic Safety Course.
Classes are two hours long and you must attend the entire two hours for credit. You must complete the Sherburne County Traffic Safety Course within 30 days of receiving your citation.
To Register
You must register in person for the Traffic Safety Course within 10 business days of receiving the citation at the Sherburne County Sheriff's Office main lobby. Do not call the Sheriff's or County Attorney's office. Government Center Hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. You must bring with you the issued citation, driver's license, and a course registration fee of $75 for an adult, $25 for individuals under the age of 18, in cash or money order payable to Sherburne County Sheriff's Office.
Proceeds of the Sherburne County Sheriff's Office Traffic Safety Course go toward drug/gang education and prevention activities in Sherburne County.

The Sherburne County Government Center is located on the west edge of Elk River on the south side of Highway 10. To get to the government center from the highway you must first access the frontage road at either Waco St. or Joplin St. - Directions -
Class is held in the Sheriff's Office. Enter the building at Door G, which is the next entrance to the right (or east) of the flag pole.
