Vital Records - Passports

The Sherburne County Recorder's Office is an acceptance agent for passport applications.

Please make note of the following requirements for passport application:

  • The applicant must apply in person
  • Valid Photo ID
  • Certified birth certificate
    can be obtained from the Recorder's Office for a $26 fee if the applicant was born in MN after 1935
  • Passport photo
    can be obtained from the Recorder's Office for a $9 fee
  • Passport fee payments accepted as follows:
    • personal checks
    • certified checks
    • money order
    • cash payment may be acceptable in some cases, please call to verify
    • credit/debit cards are NOT accepted

Here are some tips to help you get faster service:

  • Fill out the passport application ahead of time
    download application forms from the Passport Services website.
  • Please arrive at least 1/2 hour prior to closing to assure enough processing time.
  • Avoid the rush:
    • Avoid the lunch hour or end of the day.
    • Avoid days right before or after holidays.
    • Be aware that we may be busier during school breaks (passport season).

Passport Photos are now available from the Recorder's Office for a $9 fee

NOTE: All Returned Checks are subject to a $30.00 charge

Renewal Service by Mail

You may use form DS-82 if your previous passport:

  • was issued when you were 16 or older
  • was issued in the last 15 years
  • was issued under the same name
  • is not damaged
  • is submitted with your application

The passport fees for adults eligible to apply by mail using form DS-82, Application for a US Passport by Mail, are $110 for the passport book and $30 for the passport card.

    To apply at the agency, you must schedule an appointment by calling toll-free at 1-877-487-2778, open 24 hours/day. When you make the appointment you must let them know you are planning on applying at the Minneapolis Passport Agency.
  • June 1, 2009 - U. S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry are required to have documents that comply with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, most commonly a U. S. Passport or a Passport Card.
