A person who meets the requirements for the homestead classification must file a homestead application with the County Assessor to initially obtain the Homestead Credit.
To apply for homestead you may either apply in person at the Assessors Office or complete the necessary forms listed below. If applying in person, please bring a copy of your deed with you. While only one person has to be present, please bring the social security number of the person who can not make it. If applying by mail, please mail a copy of your deed with your homestead application.
In order to apply for homestead, the owner must own and occupy the property as their primary residence or the property may be occupied by a qualifying relative of the owner on January 2nd of the assessment year.
Form Instructions: All forms must be received with original signature. Please print out the form, complete, sign, and date. The completed form can be either mailed to the Assessor's Office or delivered in person.
Regular Homestead Application Forms
Mid-year Homestead Application
If you own and occupy on or before December 1st, you will need to complete and have on file at the Sherburne County Assessors Office a Mid-year Homestead application by December 15th. By completing the form(s), you will receive homestead for the current assessment year and next year's property taxes will reflect your homestead classification rates.

Why are there two forms?
The reason for the two forms is simply that who ever owns and occupies the property on January 2nd is the homesteader for the rest of the assessment year. If your primary residence is to change at any time, Minnesota state law requires you to contact your County Assessor within 30 days.
Relative Homestead Application
In the case of a qualifying relative occupying the property, the owner(s) and the qualifying relative must sign the initial relative homestead application. When submitting the initial application, we will need proper documentation showing the relationship between the occupant and the owner. This may be done with a photocopy of a birth certificate, marriage certificate, etc. The initial application must be on file with the correct documentation in order to receive the relative homestead credit.
The relative homestead renewal application must be completed every January 2nd by the occupant due to the primary residence changes more frequently. The renewal application should only be used by those that have the initial application on file with the Sherburne County Assessors Office.

Why Do I Have to Provide My Social Security Number?
Social Security numbers must be furnished to the county assessor by each occupant who is listed as an owner of the property on the deed, the name and address of each owner who do not occupy the property, and the name and social security number of each owner's spouse who occupies the property. The homestead application must be signed by the property owner who occupies the property and each owner's spouse who occupies the property.
