Ewald moved to Sherburne County from Champlin, MN in 1978. Ewald and Rita have been married for 42 years and have 6 children and 6 grandchildren. They have been specialty crop farmers and have just retired from commercial farming.

Ewald served nearly 16 years on the Big Lake Town Board and has been on the County Long-Range (TAC) Committee, alternate to Planning and Zoning and Board of Adjustment Committees, and served on the County Solid Waste Advisory Committee.
